The US Army chorus sang “One More Day” from Les Misérables — a protest anthem from one of the most powerful musicals of all time. If you’re not familiar, Les Misérables examines the societal and political impacts of unjust government and the power of the human spirit to overcome adversity. So, the US Army chorale performed One More Day at the Governor’s Ball — surrounding the President with their voices powerfully raised in protest. Incredible.
Do you hear the people sing?
I’ve spent much time feeling anxious — putting that anxiety into action by making an appointment to update and secure passports for the kids — looking into the logistics of moving abroad, how and if that could work for our family…
Do you hear the people sing?
Because I don’t want our family in a country that prioritizes gun ownership over children’s lives and public safety over and over and over again. I don’t want to live in a country that aligns itself with the regimes of Russia and North Korea. I don’t want to live in a country where my girls would be punished (or die) for wanting or needing an abortion. I don’t want to live in a country that places one ridiculous religion above all other belief systems. I don’t want to live in a country that prioritizes billionaires and corporations over educating its citizens all while banning books and silencing artists and journalists. I don’t want to live in a country that overlooks and celebrates white supremacy. I don’t want to live in a country that disregards our beautiful landscapes, environment, and wildlife all while vilifying those who care for it. I don’t want to live in a country where the validity of your humanity depends on where and how you were born.
While all of this is heavy on my mind — I feel courage knowing that there are millions of people ranging from artists to park rangers that are loud and unapologetic in their protest.
For now, anyway, I sing along with the US Army chorus,
“There’s a new world for the winning
There’s a new world to be won
Do you hear the people sing?
My place is here, I fight’s with you”
